BMW X3 (2004-) Review

Overall Rating 3 Stars
Description
X3 is BMW's much-anticipated Freelander rival. It's surprisingly capable off-road and remarkably car-like to drive on-road, though it's neither as comfortable nor as expensively-appointed as it should be for the price.

Road Test
Small off-roaders like the X3 are usually as much about posing as ability off-tarmac, but the X3 scores very well on both counts. As a BMW, and a mini-X5 to the same formula, it has all the right credentials, yet its xDrive permanent four-wheel drive system with Hill Descent Control is surprisingly competent. And since it is built on the 3-Series platform, it's as rewarding and responsive to drive on-road as a 3 saloon or estate, despite its height and extra ground clearance. Six-cylinder 2.5- and 3.0-litre petrol engines are offered at first, but diesels the acclaimed 3.0 and 2.0 won't arrive in the UK until next year. The 3.0 petrol, however, doesn't feel as powerful as it should, so it's worth waiting for the stronger diesels. The X3 is most let down by its cheap-looking cabin with hard plastics and low feelgood factor. Its ride is also too firm.
Positive Points
  • Sporty handling and excellent grip
  • A prestige package
  • almost a baby X5
  • Refined engines and good ride comfort
Negative Points
  • Pricey for a medium sport/leisure 4x4...
  • ... And extras push prices even higher
  • Interior styling lacks distinction
